Do you feel as though you’re running on empty every day?
Most of us are not that in tuned into how our bodies feel, that is until something goes wrong. You notice if you feel more tired than usual, you have a stomach ache or start to suffer from various illnesses.
Sometimes, when you’re feeling a bit under the weather, it can be caused by not making healthy food choices and what you put in your body on a daily basis. Food is the fuel that powers your machine. However, not all food is created equal and what you put in your body is what you will get out.
Your mental health is closely linked to the food you eat every day. Making healthy food choices can have a profound impact on the way your brain functions.
E.g Depression, characterised by feelings of worthlessness, guilt, loss of energy, poor concentration and thoughts of suicide can be either, helped or hindered by your diet.
You can find out which foods can help your depression here –> But read the rest of this first, come back later!!
There is something in the saying “you are what you eat”.
Ultimately, bodies are designed to regenerate, rejuvenate and procreate; that’s it, nature! However, the way to stop this happening is to throw in obstacles in its path, like that greasy burger you ate the other night because you were too tired to cook!
Here’s a simple way to imagine it. Think of a river flowing freely, now throw in a rock! What happens? The water flows around the rock.
Now throw in more rocks, what happens? You’ve built a dam; Once you build a dam, everything stops. Clever eh!
Your body is the river, and the bad food you eat is the rocks.
Do you ever eat something you know isn’t good for you and feel crappy afterwards? I do it all the time and instantly regret it!
Make the right choices for your mental health.
Your mood often affects the way you think about food and vice versa. Your food usually affects your mood!
When you’re suffering from depression and anxiety, it’s a tough one. You know you have to but preparing yourself something healthy to eat is the last thing on your mind. Some days you’re too tired to get out of bed, or your brain feels like somebody just pulled the trigger on a pinball machine.
The thing is, only you have the power to change how you react on those days when you can’t function. It’s about taking charge of your emotions and making a conscious effort to treat your body well.
The moment my light went on!
For a long time, I let my depression dictate my days, though I didn’t realise it was happening at the time. However, I started feeling worse than “normal”. I began to feel excessively tired, to the point where I wasn’t able to stay awake in the afternoons.
Then there was the constant migraines and pain I felt in my body each day. I just felt horrible! Not to mention the extra two stone I gained in a short period of time, urgh.
I kept putting off a visit to my doctor. I figured it was the late nights, my depression and managing my daughter who has ASD. That alone is enough to floor anyone.
However, call it intuition, or the fact I have been dealing with all the other stuff for years now I knew this was different. I did finally make that visit. After an array of blood and (ah hem) variety of other tests! I received a diagnosis of Fibromyalgia.
Fibromyalgia is the most common musculoskeletal condition after osteoarthritis. Still, it’s often misdiagnosed and misunderstood. Its characteristics include a whole host of symptoms but mainly widespread pain, chronic fatigue and depression! <– makes total sense!
I walked away from that appointment in shock, horrified at the list of heavy-duty pain relief options and anti-depressants. I decided to opt for a more natural approach and try living a healthier lifestyle first to see if that helped!
One day, or day one. You decide!
Fibromyalgia really was the “kick up the bum” I needed, and my life changed drastically from that day on.
When you really start to take your health seriously and start to do some research; the sheer volume of information out there is overwhelming. Seriously, almost enough to make you want to give in before you start. Believe me, I know!
Being fit and healthy isn’t a fad or a trend, it’s a lifestyle.
Making the change and adjusting your lifestyle won’t be easy at first, It’ll be a journey of constant learning, trial and error!
The food you choose without thinking is often a subconscious decision. Believe it or not but eating sugar and processed foods create a vicious cycle spurred on by addiction. Technically it’s not even your fault!
With any addiction the only cure it is to stop, be focused and determined to break the habit.
Once you decide to make a change, you need to shift your mindset from a fundamental need to eliminate the feeling of hunger. Be aware of what your body is telling you and what it needs. In other words, think of your hunger as more than a feeling in your tummy!
Food is fuel and nature designed its fruits (and veggies!) to nourish your body on a functional level.
The higher the quality of food you put in your body the higher quality of your health. Most of the food you consume daily is hybrid, genetically modified, coloured, cooked, processed and destroyed. Basically, an empty shell, which is what your body and minds become over time.
A good rule to keep in mind as you food shop is the rule of handling! Before you put something in your basket think; How many other people have handled this item? How many processes has this been through before I picked it up?
If that thought isn’t enough to have your toes curling, then I don’t know what is!
Food can be medicine
You know the basics, Vitamine C for a cold, fruit and vegetables are good for you etc. But making the right food choices goes so much deeper than this.
The nutrients in food enable the cells in your body to perform its necessary functions. A lot of diets encourage you to view food as the enemy, but instead, you should see food as a way to create health. Healthy food choices can either heal or harm your body.
I think sometimes it’s the not knowing where to start that creates a problem. However, there are so many fantastic resources out there that can help you take your first steps.
There’ll always be”eye-rollers”, controversies and contradictions but you’re are on your own path and know your own body. Once you start to connect the dots and get a sense that what you’re doing with your life isn’t working so well, change will come.
Make the change for yourself, your overall mind and body wellness. Healthy food choices won’t just affect your physical health but your mind and spirit as well.
Choosing health has changed my mindset. Once you learn this stuff you can’t unlearn it! I am by no means an expert and I still have a long way to go! But I can guarantee you I’ve noticed the difference. Try it and see for yourself!
